Tennant Goes to Hollywood

David Tennant may have three special episodes to go as “Doctor Who” as far as the British public is concerned, but the actor seems to have already left the role well behind, with the announcement that he has scored a leading role in the pilot for a new comedy drama series in the United States.

The series pilot, being made for US network NBC, is entitled “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer”, and stars Tennant as a successful Chicago lawyer who begins suffering panic attacks in court. Unable to function, he instead begins to coach his clients into representing themselves in the court room.

The pilot for the new series is being directed by David Semel, who also directed the pilot episode of the hit US science fiction series “Heroes”. Tennant began his career in theatre before making his name in TV dramas such as “Casanova” (from the pen of “Doctor Who” writer Russell T Davies”) and “Blackpool”, but it was the decision to cast Tennant as the Doctor, replacing Christopher Eccleston who left the role after just one series of the remake of the popular cult sci-fi show, that made him a household name in Britain and across the world. He has since returned to theatre with acclaimed performances in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s recent productions of “Hamlet” and “Love’s Labours Lost”. The next “Doctor Who” special, “The Waters of Mars” – the first of Tennant’s final three outings as the TV Time Lord – is set to be aired on the 15th of November on BBC1.
