Cartoon “How To Train Your Dragon” claimed the number one spot at the US box office over the weekend after four weeks in theatres.
The film pulled in twenty million dollars over the three day weekend, narrowly beating the R rated super hero satire “Kick-Ass” to the top spot. It is unusual for a film such as “Dragon” to gain the top spot after an initially disappointing start, but the film appears to be holding up well, and has now earned a domestic total of just over a hundred and fifty eight and a half million. It should be noted, however, that “Dragon” has the advantage of the extra price for 3D ticket sales; on a “bums on seat” basis, “Kick-Ass” was actually more popular, and still took in just under twenty million, with the studio predicting its numbers will hold in the coming weeks, saying the film will “play and play”. “The ‘definite recommends’ (from exit polling) are through the roof compared to the norms,” David Spitz, Executive Vice President for Distribution at Lionsgate, claimed.
Third place went to the Steve Carrell and Tina Fey starring comedy “Date Night” (takin in just under seventeen and a half), with the (baffling) US remake of Brit comedy “Death at a Funeral” (itself just three years old) in fourth place with seventeen million precisely. Fifth place went to the 3D remake of “Clash of the Titans”, which pulled in just under sixteen million for a domestic total so far of a hundred and thirty three million, this despite a critical mauling and much dismissal of its cheap 3D conversion process.
