Smallville Goes for Ten

Cult sci-fi show “Smallville” has been renewed for an extraordinary tenth season. The Superman series, which stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent, began in 2001 with Clark Kent as a school kid in the small Kansas town where he grew up, but the series has now been running for so long that the character is now a journalist in The Daily Planet newspaper in Metropolis, as he was in the traditional “Superman” comics – although he is yet to strap on the costume in the TV series.

Any show running for ten seasons is a remarkable achievement, yet in some ways the decision by American TV network CW came as no surprise, with the ratings having been exceptionally strong in its current, ninth season, faring extremely well in its new Friday night time slot. The tenth season will be a full twenty two episode season, with no word as yet if that will be planned as the final year, or if the producers and network executives will again wait on the ratings to make any decision as to whether to carry the show on still further.

Rumours are circulating that Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor in the series for the first seven seasons, and has made occasional guest appearances since, may be returning to the series full time next year, though these have yet to be substantiated. The CW network has also issued early renewals for other dramas such as “Gossip Girl”, “90210” and cult favourites “Supernatural” and “The Vampire Diaries”.
