Live Action Ghost

“Ghost in the Shell” is one of the most beloved mangas in existence, so the announcement that Steven Spielberg would be developing a new live action version around two years ago understandably got fans in a tizzy, yet since then remarkably little news has leaked out about the project… until now.

Both MoviesOnline and Screen Rant recently caught up with Laeta Kalogridis (writer of Martin Scorcese’s forthcoming thriller “Shutter Island” and a producer on the unstoppable James Cameron 3D blockbuster “Avatar”), who is writing the screenplay for the film, to see what’s happening, including trying to find out the answer to the question as to whether the new movie will be an adaptation of the original 1989 manga written by Masamune Shirow or the extremely popular 1995 anime, which was directed by Mamoru Oshii.

“”Ghost in the Shell” was originally the manga,” Kalogridis told MoviesOnline. “The anime came from the original graphic novel and then – and that anime, as you know, is a relatively famous, groundbreaking piece of material – also generated two seasons of an animated television show, as you recall. And this is an adaptation of the original manga, the original comic book that sort of began everything.” Kalogridis also reiterated the same point to Screen Rant, adding that the film “has a lot of action… lots of action” but that “there’s still going to be a lot of atmosphere… (it) is about vast possibilities – all of this technology, the internet – it’s about the limitless possibilities of this technology.”
