Fans of cult drama “Lost” are surprising Hollywood insiders after widespread refusal to watch the much anticipated “Lost” sixth season premiere when it leaked onto the internet last week.
The premiere, which is the first episode of the final season of the much loved series, aired on US TV this week, but when the opening scene of the show leaked onto the internet last Friday, executives were taken by surprise… by fans refusing to watch it. “Why spoil it now?” wrote one fan under the net moniker of MyWhiteNoise. “I’d rather watch it in hi-def and surround sound than ruin the surprise and watch some (low quality) video.”
The sentiment was taken even further when the entire episode leaked onto the net on Monday, yet resulted in only a few hundred hits and even more fan scorn. “Are people so impatient they would rather watch a cell phone version of the “Lost” premiere than wait one day?” Twitter user Kyool wrote in despair. In the internet age, such patience is indeed a rare thing and one that shows the level of respect “Lost” fans have for the series and its writers. “We never had a show like “Lost” before that had these kinds of fans that love it so much they don’t want to know what happens before the premiere,” notes Michael Benson, the Co-Executive Vice President of Marketing at ABC, which airs the show in the US. “Fans feel like they own the thing, just like we do.”
